Angela takes us into the locker room before and after U.S. Women’s National Team took first place in the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup at GM Place in Vancouver, B.C. a few weeks ago. The top four women’s ice hockey teams in the world — the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland — faced off in Team USAs first international competition of the season, which served as a test event for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Canadian Hockey Players must vatch de ‘figger skating’??….NEIN!!
I happened to catch this no-doubt promotional “feature’ for the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics on US national news recently. The more I thought about….. the more ‘entertaining’ it became:
1) First, it struck me as kind of a ‘left-handed’ slap in the face directed at 1994 Olympic champ – Alexei Urmanov……..after 15 years, is perhaps someone still….bitter????? Hardly the kind of Olympian sportsmanship supposedly espoused by the principals of world competition.
2) This seems to be a manifestation of the figure skating as ‘Sport’ crowd, which apparently is controlling skating today, much to the detriment of the event, in my opinion. Elivis and Scott Hamilton seem to be of one-mind in this regard, concerning the direction of our sport. I suppose they think tight-fitting, crack showing spandex is a ‘less gay’ choice in costuming. I suspect NAMBLA will be highly supportive of this effort to boost ratings! At least it will be a nice contrast to the sky-pointing spiral crotch shots of the ladies event. In the old days, the spiral was a pattern traced on the ice, not a bikini wax pattern. Dare we hope for a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ in the men’s event?
We had a sport that emphasized “Masculinity, Strength, and Power”…..it was called Barrel Jumping!! (and it died in 1974)
3) Last time I checked, figure skating was a ‘womens’ event as far as televised viewing goes. My own audience here at YOUTUBE is consistently 60% female, and 40% male,(of which I would suspect at least half would select ‘other’ on a US census questionaire regarding sexual preference). The only hockey players who have ever watched figure skating are those that were forced to by their wives, girl friends, or mothers, who demand control of the remote during these annual ritual gatherings for National, World, and Olympic competition.
4) Costuming is a creative, theatrical choice that enhances the ‘so-called’ artistic aspect of a skater’s performance. Now, I recognize most skaters do not even know the name of their music, nor possess any background knowledge regarding what, if anything, the piece might be about. This is a nice complement to the musical ignorance of our skating commentators. I would certainly hate it if any figure skating coverage might perchance become slightly……”educational” on even the most superficial of levels. Scott Hamilton’s opportunities to scream “Perfect Landing” or “beautifully delivered”, would be seriously curtailed by the introduction of cultural significance to an international gathering of nations at the Olympics.
5) I checked with the local chapter of our International Gay Hockey Players ociation at Ice Forum, Norcross and they were ‘completely confused’. Will peer pressure prevent them from watching the Olympic mens event this time???? Thank goodness the Stanley Cup playoffs are still on, and they can continue to stare blankly at the fuzzy cable connection they have there in the locker room. Yet another reason, NOT to come up for air!!!!!
6) I am sad that the AIDS epidemic destroyed so thoroughly the integrity of the Canadian skating federation. It might have been an effective check on the rampant proliferation of dumbness in this organization. Perhaps we can count on what few homosexuals are left north of the border, ( i.e the entire population of Montreal), to counter this menace to figure skating. GAYS GONE FROM FIGURE SKATING.????? This is NOT what Obama promised us with ……”Change we can believe in”!!!!!
7) And what would we do with all the free time we would have by not arguing over ice time in our local rinks!!
I think Canadians should stick to doing things they are actually good at……….like conveniently delivering low cost prescription drugs to Americans!!! After an admirable challenge of Olympic competition results in 2002, ,their credibility in skating is slipping fast..
