Hockey Trade Rumours Report – Calgary Flames NHL

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here with OHL Hockey News, bringing you the Hockey Trade Rumours Report. Lots of NHL trade rumours swirling around the start of the Calgary Flames camp.

Hockey Trade Rumours Report – Calgary Flames NHL Trade Rumours

Adrian Aucoin isn’t some rube as green as a bushel of brussels sprouts. The Calgary Flames defenceman is in fact pretty sharp — a perfectly bilingual chap who attended Boston University. Aucoin broke into the National Hockey League with Vancouver in 1995, which is 13 years — or, if you prefer, five Canucks sweater modifications — ago.

Canadian Hockey League Jerseys For Sale

So when he looks around the locker-room and sees eight rearguards with a combined 3,709 contests of NHL experience and only seven jobs available, he knows there’s a problem.

When he takes note of eight one-way contracts worth a total of $25 million, he realizes something has to give. “A lot of guys are thinking about it,” said Aucoin, who will make $4 million in the final season of a deal signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2005, “but something’s going to happen sooner or later. I think everybody knows they have to do what they do best and something’s going to happen.

“Obviously, (general manager Darryl Sutter) will have to make a hard decision. It’s not going to be easy, but hopefully whoever it is, he’s going to find some greener grass somewhere else.” One report suggested Aucoin, despite no-trade protection, would be the guy to go, with the Los Angeles Kings the most likely suitor.

Adrian Aucoin enjoys NHL Trade Rumours gossp!

“Oh yeah, I’m sure,” laughed Aucoin, who admits he actually enjoys trade gossip. “They need money (in Los Angeles in order to get up to the salary floor). There’s going to be rumours. It’s going to happen a lot more now when you see older guys in their last year that there’ll be rumours about them. I mean it’s always been like that, but even more now.”

The situation on Calgary’s back end might be tricky, but all visible evidence suggests it’s anything but awkward. Guys battling for the same job kid with each other and, as was the case Friday when Rhett Warrener went after the Florida player who cross-checked Anders Eriksson, stick up for one another.

“That’s the type of players that we have here,” said Aucoin, a 35-year-old Ottawa product. “You look at our D corps and you’re not going to find many better guys in the league as persons. Even though you’re in competition with the other guys out there, we never see it as that.”

The 2007-08 season was as good as it’s been for Aucoin since the lockout. After two miserable, injury sabotaged seasons with the Blackhawks, he played 76 games and notched 10 goals and 25 assists in his first Calgary season.

In a day when free-flowing hockey is all the rage, Aucoin admits he’s a bit of a dinosaur. “I’m all right (with the way the game is played today) just because I can move the puck,” he said. “That’s what helps my style of game. But personally, I still prefer the clutch and grab. I’m not the slowest guy, but I’ve always been really good with my stick and using it to tie up (opponents’) hands and grabbing and pushing and getting under guys’ skins. Hockey Trade Rumours Report – Claude Lemieux eyes NHL Comeback

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here with OHL Hockey News, bringing you the Hockey Trade Rumours Report. This is more like a hockey comeback rumour report out of Denver, Co.

Hockey Trade Rumours Report – NHL Comeback for Claude Lemieux

He is 43 years old and hasn’t played in the NHL in five years. But Claude Lemieux says he is in better shape than he was when he played for the Avalanche in the late 1990s, and says he will attempt a comeback to the game he loves.
“I got the passion back, and I know I can do it,” Lemieux said Thursday. Lemieux retired from the NHL after the 2002-03 season with Dallas, partly because of injuries to his groin and ankle. He then played briefly in Switzerland in 2003-04, before quitting as a player to become the president of the Phoenix Roadrunners of the East Coast Hockey League.

Canadian Hockey League Jerseys For Sale

Lemieux tired of the front-office duties and departed the Roadrunners, and has since done things like run a hockey school in the Phoenix area. He said he decided two and a half months ago that he wanted to give it a shot at a comeback to the NHL. “I skated with some guys from the Coyotes, including one that played with the Avs for a while, Steve Reinprecht. After a scrimmage, he said to me, ‘You’re flying out there, you going to play again? And I said, ‘You think I should?” and it kind of went from there,” Lemieux said.

Claude was a huge start in the Quebec Major Junior League palying for Trois Rivieres Draveurs and the Verdun Junior Canadiens before turning pro.

Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup winner who scored 80 goals and 158 points in 233 career playoff games, said he will act as his own agent and call teams to ask for tryouts. He expressed great interest in returning to the Avalanche, and believes his former team, or any other in the NHL, wouldn’t be sorry if they give him a chance.

Lemieux has been working out daily with noted fitness trainer Andrew Urban — who is living in Lemieux’s house — and said he would play for a team’s minor-league affiliate first if that’s what it takes.

“I’m not doing this just to play one game in the NHL and that’s it. I really think I can still help a team make the playoffs, and into the playoffs. It would sure be nice to get that fifth Stanley Cup,” he said. “I’m going to give myself two to three weeks to see if any team will give me a chance, but even if that doesn’t happen, it’s a long year and I plan to keep working out hard. The biggest thing is that I know I can still play with guys who are still playing now for teams, and I know what it takes to win.”

The Avalanche had no immediate comment if it has any interest in signing Lemieux. Hockey Trade Rumours Report thanks Adrian Dater, The Denver Post Former Av Lemieux trying comeback – The Denver Post

Hockey Trade Rumours Report, Los Angeles Kings

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here with OHL Hockey News, bringing you the Hockey Trade Rumours Report. Are NHL trade rumours building up in the Los Angeles Kings camp with former OHL all-star Patrick O’sullivan?

Hockey Trade Rumours Report – Los Angeles Kings NHL Trade Rumours

Team continues to try to work out a deal with the third-year forward, but General Manager Dean Lombardi says the offer won’t be for anything less than three years. As the standoff continues between the Kings’ front office and the agent for third-year forward Patrick O’Sullivan, the likelihood of General Manager Dean Lombardi conceding on a one-year contract grows slimmer.

Patrick played 4 years for the Mississauga IceDogs 2000-2005 after coming from the U.S.A. Junior National Team.

Patrick O’Sullivan remains away from Los Angeles Kings camp

Every day that O’Sullivan is held out of training camp, his conditioning and development suffer, Lombardi said. As a result, it’s more likely that the team’s fourth-leading scorer from last season won’t be at full strength until early next year.

“We’re not giving him a one-year contract because I might have to write off this season,” Lombardi said during practice Thursday morning. In fact, Lombardi said he won’t offer anything less than a three-year deal. As far as sending the wrong message to other Kings, several of whom will be restricted free agents after this season, Lombardi said he’s trying to avoid that scenario. “The whole message we’re trying to send is we want to keep everybody together,” he said. “If [O'Sullivan's contract] is not done right, you’re going to have a problem with the other guys.”

Anze Kopitar, the team’s leading scorer last season who played on the same line as O’Sullivan, will become a restricted free agent in the off-season. He’s hoping he doesn’t get caught up in the same mess.

“Hopefully, we can get a deal done before that,” he said. “But my mind is on hockey right now, where it should be.” NHL Trade Rumours Report thanks; Patrick O’Sullivan remains away from Kings camp – Los Angeles Times

Hockey Trade Rumours Report, Anaheim Ducks

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here with OHL Hockey News, bringing you the Hockey Trade Rumours Report. Are NHL Trade Rumours over with Anaheim Ducks after dealing former OHL graduate Mathieu Schneider to Atlanta? Mathieu had a great OHL career with the Cornwall Royals from 1986 to 1989.

Hockey Trade Rumours Report -Anaheim Ducks NHL Trade Rumours

Escaping a precarious predicament relatively painlessly, the Ducks on Friday pared $3.84 million from their salary-cap figure by sacrificing veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider in a four-player trade with the Atlanta Thrashers. The Ducks received two NHL veterans, defenseman Ken Klee and left wing Brad Larsen, and minor-league winger Chad Painchaud in exchange for Schneider, who had been on the block for months because of financial constraints. Chad is also a former OHL graduate who played for Mississauga IceDogs and the Sarnia Sting.

Canadian Hockey League Jerseys For Sale

The net result left the Ducks with an internal salary-cap projection of $55.3 million, $1.4 million beneath the NHL’s $56.7 million limit. Notably, the arrival at those numbers factors in the inclusion of rookie winger Bobby Ryan, and his $1.7467 million cap hit, on the club’s opening-night roster. Ryan is an OHL graduate from the Owen Sound Attack.

Two of the seven teams that made “concrete offers” for Schneider were also in “dogged” pursuit of Ryan, the second overall selection in the 2005 entry draft whom the Ducks are counting on to play among their top-six forwards, General Manager Brian Burke said.

“We’ve accomplished two goals,” Burke said. “We’ve gotten under the cap and we managed to do it without parting with Bobby Ryan. That is something we did not want to do.

Are NHL hockey trade rumours over with the Ducks?

“We’re not done yet. Our next goal is to get under enough to sign Teemu Selanne. We have a multitude of options.”

Among the possibilities is further trade activity. The addition of Larsen, who will make $560,000 this season but carries a cap hit of $535,000, gives the Ducks 13 forwards on one-way contracts. Ryan is on a two-way deal that includes an $821,700 NHL base salary and $925,000 in potential performance bonuses.

The club’s salary-cap total would be lessened dramatically if Ryan were assigned to the Iowa Chops of the American League, but Ryan has enjoyed a strong opening week of training camp that included a two-goal, three-point effort in Wednesday night’s exhibition opener, a 6-4 victory over San Jose at Honda Center. “Certainly, Bobby made a statement the other night where he wants to play this season,” Burke said.

Klee, like Larsen, is due to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Klee, 37, will make $1.25 million this season and becomes the Ducks’ seventh proven NHL defenseman, joining Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Francois Beauchemin, Sean O’Donnell, Kent Huskins and off-season, free-agent addition Steve Montador.

The Ducks had been hoping to create a roster opening for one of their top blue-line prospects, a group that includes Brendan Mikkelson, Brett Festerling and Orange County product Brian Salcido. That might still occur if a defenseman is traded, or the Ducks could glean further salary-cap savings by assigning a player on a one-way contract to Iowa.

“Having seven established guys is nice in a way, but I’m not sure it’s the model we’re going to go,” Burke said. “We’re going to explore all avenues. Our priority right now is to catch our breath and figure out the next step.”

Selanne, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, has been in training camp on a tryout contract while awaiting resolution of the salary-cap challenge. While Burke said he would prefer not to again exceed the salary cap by signing Selanne before other moves clear further cap space, negotiations are ongoing with Selanne’s agent, Don Baizley.

Schneider, 39, signed a two-year, free-agent deal worth $11.25 million in July 2007, when Niedermayer and Selanne were contemplating retirement in the wake of the Ducks’ Stanley Cup championship. Schneider’s $5.625 million cap hit, as well as a two-year, $8 million contract given winger Todd Bertuzzi, who has since been bought out, became more than the team could handle after Niedermayer and Selanne ultimately returned last season.

“It was a strange situation that may never come around again,” said Schneider, who acknowledged no hard feelings. “Brian Burke was up front and honest 100 percent of the time. As a player, you can’t ask for anything more. He let my agent and myself be involved in a lot of the discussions, talking to other teams. He was great about taking everything into consideration.”

mathieu schneider, anaheim ducks nhl

Schneider, whom the Thrashers are counting on to quarterback their power play and lend guidance to a youthful defense corps, must pass a physical by Sunday in order for the trade to become official. He had not undergone a medical exam with the Ducks, having received permission and agreed to remain away from camp while awaiting a trade.

The 6-foot, 215-pound Klee is a veteran of 863 NHL games who has also played with Washington, Toronto, New Jersey and Colorado. He averaged 20 minutes, two seconds of ice time in 72 games for Atlanta last season, producing a goal, 10 points and a minus-5 mark that equaled the second-best among Thrashers defensemen.

Larsen, 31, is an energy-line type who began his career with the Avalanche and has 294 games of NHL experience. A 6-0, 210-pounder, he managed a goal, four assists and 12 penalty minutes in 62 games with Atlanta last season, but has been idled since Sunday because of a groin injury that is apparently not serious.

“It’s not an issue for us,” Burke said. “Ken Klee is a versatile player who can play forward or defense, has size, and does just about everything with some level of proficiency. Brad is a hard-working, useful player.”

Painchaud, 22, split last season between Chicago of the AHL and Gwinnett of the ECHL. A fourth-round draft pick in 2004, the 6-1, 185-pound Painchaud had a goal and three points in 22 games with the Wolves, and eight goals and 14 points in 10 games with the Gladiators. The Ducks assigned Painchaud to Iowa.

“We were very high on him when we drafted him,” Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said. “He’s a very skilled player, but had a tough time sticking in the AHL. I think getting a fresh start somewhere will be good for his career. Thanks to; NHL Rumors for Saturday, September 27, 2008.
