History Of The Nhl

The National Hockey League now comprises of 30 professional teams in most major cities in North America. It has a long, decorated history and legions of fans in both the United States and Canada. The league owes its existence to a 1917 meeting held in a Montreal hotel between several team owners.

The Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs at that time were all apart of the National Hockey Association (NHA). The owners of these teams underwent a series of disputes with Eddie Livingstone, owner of the Toronto Blueshirts. At this meeting, the owners voted to suspend the NHA. On November 26, 1917, the four teams formed to make a new league, and the National Hockey League was born.

The Bulldogs were unable to play in the NHL, and the remaining owners created a team in Toronto. In its early days, the league champions had to compete with other league champions to get the Stanley Cup the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Toronto won the first league title, and then defeated the Pacxific Coast Hockey Associations Vancouver Millionaires to win the 1918 Stanley Cup.

The next year was marred by tragedy. The Montreal Canadiens won the 1919 NHL title but their Stanley Cup Final against the Seattle Metropolitans ended with the series tied after several players were hit with the Spanish Flu epidemic. Joe Hall of Montreal ended up losing his life as a result of the illness.

The Canadiens would be back competing for the Stanley Cup a few years later in 1924 when they faced the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League. They prevailed, winning their second Stanley Cup in team history.

In the mid 1920s, the league began to expand. The Boston Bruins and the Montreal Maroons were added in 1924, with the Bruins becoming the first team from the United States to play in the NHL. The New York Americans began play in 1925 and were joined by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tex Rickard, who owned Madison Square Garden, added a second New York team the Rangers after witnessing the popularity of the Americans.

The expansion came to a halt as a result of the Great Depression and World War II in the 1930s and 1940s. Many teams ended up folding and the league was reduced to six teams for the 1942-43 season. The six teams were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. These six teams, known as the Original Six, remained constant for 25 years.
The NHL was forced to expand in the mid 1960s as a result of the emergence of new hockey leagues who planned to declare themselves as contenders for the Stanley Cup. The NHL doubled in size for the 1967-68 season, adding six more teams in LA, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Oakland, and St. Louis. Two seasons later, the NHL responded to the Canadiens concern that all the new teams were in the US by adding a team in Vancouvar as well as a team in Buffalo.

The NHL draws from a talent pool from around the world. It has players from about 20 different countries. Most NHL players are from Canada, but as a result of the NHLs rapid expansion into the US in the mid 1960s there is a growing number of Americans in the league. Additionally, many European players play in the NHL, especially those from Eastern Bloc countries.
