Paul Kelly’s pitch takes a hit

Former NHLPA prez Paul Kelly, in his new role as director of College Hockey Inc, has been shoveling some dirt at the CHL lately, mainly at the way some CHL teams recruit players.

One of his chief beefs there is that the CHL recruits 15 & 16 year olds. Putting aside the irony in the notion that anyone who represents the NCAA would criticize someone else’s recruiting practices, Kelly’s argument just took a huge hit.
Yes, it’s football and not hockey. But 13 years old? How many other 13, 14, 15 year old football and basketball players get this kind of attention too only we never hear about it?
I think the NCAA is an awesome option to the CHL for young hockey players who are inclined that way, I’m not knocking it at all. I’m just getting tired of this guy’s schtick already which seems to be primarily geared towards slagging the CHL instead of touting the benefits of his own product. I’m sure there are some CHL operators who are engaging in some shady practices, and that’s unfortunate and if they’re breaking the CHL’s rules then they should be punished. But nobody who represents the NCAA like Kelly does should feel themselves in any position to be pointing fingers….
