Canada beats up Czech Republic 8-1 in Opener
John Tavares salutes the fans after his first goal. Photo Andre Ringuette HHOF/IIHF Images.OHL Hockey News with a report from the World Junior Hockey Championship . SCOTIABANK PLACE – In front of a home crowd of 19,640, Canada kicked off its World Junior Championship with a 8-1 win against the Czech Republic. It was the biggest attendance in World Junior history, surpassing the 19,465 fans who attended a December 30, 1994 tilt between Canada and the Czechs in Calgary.
John Tavares was the key to the Canadian victory as the potential number-one NHL draft pick had two goals and an assist in the win. In fact, it was Tavares who pulled Canada out of a first-period slump when he scored the 1-0 goal with four seconds left in the first period. For the Czechs, the goal was a blow after playing a solid first period in an antagonistic atmosphere.
Tavares again set the tone in the second period when he notched his second goal just 2:09 into the period. Tavares followed up the pair of goals with a picture-perfect pass through the crease to Angelo Eposito who gave Canada a 3-0 lead. After that goal, the Czechs were deflated as Canada dominated the offensive zone for the rest of the period. Canada added its fourth goal when Ryan Ellis popped in the puck after a scrum down low. Tyler Ennis closed the period with a 5-0 goal at the 33:33 mark.
The fifth goal marked the end of the game for Czech goaltender Tomas Vosvrda, who was replaced by Dominik Furch. Furch let in his first goal when Chris di Domenico scored the sixth Canadian goal 2:06 into the third period. From there, the Candians cruised, putting in another two goals to make it 8-0. Jan Kana of the Czech Republic spoiled Tokarski’s shutout bid with a late marker.
Canada has tomorrow off before facing Kazakhstan on Sunday. The Czechs will have a day to regroup before taking on the U.S. on Sunday. OHL Hockey News thanks; JENNY WIEDEKE Canada feasts 8-1 in opener

Detroit Shuffles Forward and Defense Corps
by Matt Saler
Update (6:30 PM): It looks like these combinations may not make an appearance in a game after all. Of course, that could just be Babcock being coy. We’ll find out tomorrow. - Matt Saler
Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock has decided to mix up his forward lines and defensive pairings in an apparent attempt to generate better play from a team that is not playing up to its own high standards. The mixing began yesterday in practice and carried over to today’s, suggesting the possibility that the new combos may make their in-game debut Wednesday against the Calgary Flames.
The most noticeable change is to the nominal top line, which has remained untouched this season except in cases of injury. Pavel Datsyuk has skated with Marian Hossa and Tomas Holmstrom (when healthy) all season, but is now centering Holmstrom and Valtteri Filppula. Filppula is frustratingly prone to underachieving, but has looked good with Datsyuk in the past.
Hossa has moved to Henrik Zetterberg’s wing with Dan Cleary. The big Slovak has played with Zetterberg only very occassionally this season, but will look to duplicate the magic he and Datsyuk have produced. This change breaks up the all-Swede line of Johan Franzen, Mikael Samuelsson, and Zetterberg.
Franzen is centering his own line, with Jiri Hudler and Samuelsson taking the wings. That line could be the most dangerous “third” in the League, with all three players producing at a fair clip this season.

Opinion: Toronto Maple Leafs: Goaltending Situation Looks Very Familiar
Written by Rob Ellis
This season, the Leafs began with 31-year-old Vesa Toskala as the starter with an aging 41-year-old named Curtis Joseph as the backup.
Potvin went to be the Leafs starter for another five seasons before a guy named Curtis Joseph came to town.
Matt Stajan is not supposed to have 21 points.
