Lou Lamoriello’s Role Not in Danger

Author: admin Category: OHL Hockey

The news around the Devils Tuesday should rightfully be about their Game 7 against the Hurricanes, but Sports Business Journal had other plans. They reported Tuesday morning that the team was looking for a business executive to take over revenue-building duties, stripping those duties from do-everything honcho Lou Lamoriello and allowing him the opportunity to focus solely on the hockey operations side.

Apparently, the league has been bitten for the second day in a row by an erroneous report. After ESPN wrongfully reported Monday one-game suspensions for Capitals Donald Brashear and Mike Green only to redact the report shortly thereafter, Devils chairman/managing partner Jeff Vanderbeek called the Lamoriello report “very inaccurate.”

Congratulations, Columbus Blue Jackets!

Author: admin Category: Hockey Trade Rumours

It’s been a long time coming for the Columbus Blue Jackets, but for the first time in franchise history, they’re heading to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Jackets, who entered the National Hockey League in 2000, were the last active NHL franchise without a playoff appearance, a dubious distinction they’re undoubtedly happy to put behind them.

Kudos to general manager Scott Howson for his fine work in only two short years in the job in turning this club into a playoff contender, and to head coach Ken Hitchcock for his?efforts in improving the club’s on-ice performance.

Former (and oft-maligned) general manager Doug MacLean also deserves a hat tip for laying the foundation with his draft picks, notably Rick Nash, Steve Mason, Rostislav Klesla, and Derrick Brassard, as well as hiring Hitchcock.

And of course credit the roster for their hard work and improvement this season, which include the aforementioned players but also additions such as R.J. Umberger, Antoine Vermette, Mike Commodore, Fedor Tyutin, Kristian Huselius and Jason Williams,

It remains to be seen how far the Jackets go in the upcoming post-season, and their potential first round opponents (either Calgary or Vancouver) will provide stiff opposition, but no matter, they’re finally in the playoffs, and that’s something they can build on both on and off the ice.

Enjoy the ride, Jackets fans, however long or short it may be.

Latest NHL Signings and Moves - April 11, 2009.

Author: admin Category: Hockey Trade Rumours

- TSN.ca reports Saturday the Detroit Red Wings and winger Johan Franzen have agreed to a new contract, and while there’s no financial terms yet available (I’ll post them here when they are) the term is apparently a lengthy one.

According to TSN’s sources Franzen’s new deal could be between nine - ten years in length in order to keep the salary affordable.

That’s not a mis-print. 9-10 years is apparently the term of Franzen’s new contract, which would take effect next season.? He is eligible for unrestricted free agency in July but had previously expressed his desire to remain with the Red Wings.

It would be a savvy way for Wings general manager Ken Holland to retain Franzen and still leave enough cap space to perhaps re-sign Marian Hossa, another winger like Franzen who is eligible for unrestricted free agency this season but also hopes to remain a Red Wing.

Still, a deal of that length could tie up considerable cap space for the Wings down the road. This deal is likely to be heavily front loaded leaving it thin in the final seasons, but it’s the average which counts against the cap over the term of the deal.

This deal would lock up Franzen, a late-blooming scorer, possibly until his 39th birthday and one has to wonder how worthwhile this could be in the latter years of the deal when he’ll be a fading star.

**UPDATE** Reports out of Detroit claim Franzen new deal is an eye-popping 11 seasons and the cap hit will be $3.95 million per season. It’s heavily front-loaded and in the final two seasons Franzen will earn $1 million per season. The deal comes with a no-trade clause in the first five-six seasons then becomes a limited one for the remainder of the deal.

- The Calgary Flames got an early start on re-signing one of their pending unrestricted free agents, re-signing right wing David Moss earlier this week to a three-year contract extension.

Moss’ new contract is worth $1.3 million per season, more than double the $550K per season he earned under his current deal.

His development?last season was?hampered by injury limiting him to only 41 games but this season he played 80 games, notching 20 goals and 38 points whilst showing considerable promise.

With Moss under contract?Flames GM Darryl Sutter will turn his attention toward?Mike Cammalleri, Todd Bertuzzi and Jordan Leopold, who are also eligible?for unrestricted free agency and will certainly cost more than Moss to retain.

- Miroslav Satan has returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Having?been demoted for salary cap reasons to their Penguins AHL affiliate following the?March 4th trade deadline the Penguins placed Satan on re-entry waivers late this week.

Satan cleared and will rejoin the Penguins for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. ?

Bemidji State Hockey Still in Limbo

Earlier in April, we told you about the potential problems in the future of the Bemidji State men’s hockey program. While they were about to play in the Frozen Four for the first time in their history, Bemidji was facing the possible dissolution of the program.

With College Hockey America set to go away after the 2009-2010 season, the Beavers need a new home to realistically remain intact. Their best option, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, still hasn’t admitted the school.

Thanks to the events of Tuesday night, as the Capitals and Hurricanes advanced in their game 7 victories, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will be taking part in a playoff series that could very well consume us all. We’ve seen playoff series’ get hyped before, but nothing will come close to the tidal wave of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin coverage that is about take the NHL by storm. Consider yourselves warned.

Before we look ahead to the madness, let’s take a few minutes and remember the glory days of one of the best playoff rivalries the 1990’s ever produced.
